BMI Calculator - Calculate Your BMI

What is BMI?

The body mass index (BMI) is a scientific measurement of a person's height-to-weight ratio. It's designed to check whether your weight is good enough based on your height.

The body weight divided by the square of height gives the BMI result. If your BMI is not in range, it does not mean that you are too fat or not fat enough. It just defines the health risks that may associated with your weight.

How to Calculate BMI?

Let's take an example to understand how the body mass index is calculated:

Example:

Compute the BMI of a person whose height is 5 feet and 7 inches and weight is 160 pounds.

Solution:

First, convert the feet into inches by multiplying the feet value by 12.

5 × 12 = 60 inches

The person's height is 5 Feet and 7 inches. So, add the 7 inches with 60.

Height(inches) = 60 + 7 = 67

Apply the BMI formula for the US/UK units:

BMI = weight(lbs) / height2(inches) × 703

BMI = 160 / (67)2 × 703

BMI = 25.1

Let's take one more example for the metric units:

Example:

Suppose, a person's height is 172 centimeters and weight is 70 kilograms. Calculate the BMI.

Solution:

First, convert the height into meters. For that, divide the centimeter value by 100.

Height(m) = 172 / 100 = 1.72

Apply the BMI formula for the metric units:

BMI = weight(kg) / height2(m)

BMI = 70 / (1.72)2

BMI = 23.7
