BMI Calculator - Calculate Your BMI

What is BMI (Body Mass Index)?

The body mass index (BMI) is a scientific measurement of a person's height to weight ratio.

The world's first BMI was developed by Adolphe Quetelet during his development of the theory of social physics. He created the Quetelet Index which was a statistical measurement of a person's weight based on their height. Later, the body mass index would use the same concept but rather created a new unit of measurement based on the kilogram per square meter.

The BMI was designed to know if your weight is good enough based on your height or not. Body weight is divided by the square of height gives the BMI number. If your BMI is not in range, it does not mean that you are too fat or not fat enough. But it defines the health risk that may associated with your weight.

How to Calculate BMI?

Let's take some examples to understand how to calculate body mass index.

Example 1:

A person's height is 5'7" and weight is 160 pounds. Find the BMI.

Solution:

Firstly, we will convert the feet into inches. For that, we need to multiply the feet value by 12.

In our case, Feet = 5.

So, 5 × 12 = 60 inches.

Also, we have 5 Feet and 7 inches. So, we will add up the 7 inches with 60.

Final height in inches = 60 + 7 = 67.

We will use the BMI formula to determine the body mass index.

BMI = weight(lbs) / height2(inches) × 703

Now place the weight and height values in the above formula.

BMI = 160 / (67)2 × 703

BMI = 112480/4489 = 25.1

Example 2:

A person's height is 172 centimeters and weight is 70 kilograms. Find the BMI.

Solution:

Firstly, we will convert the height into meters. For that, we need to divide the centimeter value by 100.

In our case, Height = 172 cm.

So, 172 / 100 = 1.72 m.

For Metric units the BMI formula will be:

BMI = weight(kg) / height2(m)

Now place the weight and height values in the formula.

BMI = 70 / (1.72)2

BMI = 70/2.958 = 23.7

The manual calculation is just for knowledge purposes. It also takes time and a physical calculator to do so. Therefore, it's better to use our online BMI calculator to make it easier, faster, and more accurate.
